Welcome to Term 2:  How do we Celebrate?

Monday 4th November 2024

Dear Elf Owl Families,

We hope you all had an enjoyable half term break. We are looking forward to the term ahead and our new topic 'How do we celebrate?' The topic focusses on the celebrations of Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day, Diwali, Hanukkah, Advent and Christmas. We will explore what people celebrate and why, as well as considering special celebrations in our own lives.

Monster Phonics

The children have made a fantastic start in phonics! Below is an overview of what we will teach in the coming weeks up until Christmas.

W.b: 11th November: Graphemes: y z zz q / High frequency words: was, will, all, went, from, help

W.b: 18th November: Graphemes: ch sh th ng / High frequency words: too, her, with, are, yes

W.b: 25th November: Graphemes: oo (as in moon) /  High frequency words: then, them, this, that, said

W.b: 2nd December : Graphemes: ar as in car / Practise reading & writing all high frequency words so far

W.b: 9th/ 16th December: Assess and consolidate learning from last 2 terms

Reading

Please continue to read with your child for 10 minutes each day. Encourage them to use their phonics to decode words where possible and spend time talking about the story. Please sign your child's yellow reading records so we know you have read together.

Maths

This term we will be exploring shape; starting with circles and triangles and later moving on to look at 4-sided shapes. We will also continue our number work and practise our 'subitising' (recognising a quantity without having to count- e.g. knowing the formation of 5 dots on a die is 5).

P.E and Forest School

P.E this term will be taught by Mr Pearce on Thursday mornings. The children will participate in a variety of exercises to explore their coordination and how they can manipulate their bodies. Please ensure your child wears full P.E kit and trainers to school every Thursday this term. Forest school will be taught by Mrs Howlett on Fridays. Please send your child to school wearing school uniform on Friday, but make sure they have a set of old clothes, waterproofs and wellies in school to get changed into.

Many thanks for your continued support. As always, do come and see us if you have any questions or concerns.

With our warmest wishes,

Mrs Ray, Miss Taylor and the Elf Owl Team
