Tawny Owls Y1

3.5.24

Hello Tawny Owls,

What a super busy week we have had! It has been filled with some wonderful learning :)

We have continued to explore the story The Storm Whale by Benji Davies. This week we have written setting descriptions to describe the beach. Some of our adjectives included: sandy, calm, sunny, smooth, glistening and rough. We then recalled the events of the story and put these into a box-up plan, where we thought about what happened at the beginning, the middle and the end of the story. We have begun to write the story in our own words. Check out some of the beginnings of our story in our photo gallery! :)

In Phonics we have been applying our sound knowledge and have been spotting digraphs, trigraphs and split digraphs in lots of different words. We have been getting used to reading pseudo words. These are the alien words, that are made up, silly words. They use the sounds we know so we can segment and blend them to work out what the alien is saying. We will continue to do this over the next few weeks. Look out for some coming home during this term.

We have worked really hard in maths to secure our place value understanding. We have been identifying how many tens and ones are in different 2 digit numbers. We have used dienes (the tens sticks and ones cubes) to make 2 digit numbers and have begun to draw sticks and dots to represent the dienes. When lining up we have been able to quickly recall what 2 digit number someone is thinking about by listening to how many tens and ones it has. For example: 3 tens and 4 ones = 34.

During PSHE we have been looking at how foods give our bodies different things, and we can group them in different ways. We explored the Eatwell Plate to see how much of each food group we should be trying to eat during each meal. We then used what we had learnt to plan a lunchbox, where we tried to make it healthy and balanced. Look at the pictures in our gallery to see what we came up with.

I hope you all have a wonderful bank holiday weekend. Let's hope the weather improves for us!

This week we have looked at the letters c and g making a soft sound.

When followed by an e, the letter c makes a /s/ sound, like in nice and ice.

When followed by an i, e or y, the letter g makes a /j/ sound, like in magic and page.

  • Each morning the children need to arrive at school between 8:45 am and 9:00 am. The blue gate will open at 8:45 am and close at 9:00 am
  • Home time is at 3:30 pm and the children will walk round to the gate at the top of the playground where they will be dismissed by a member of staff (Miss Wells on Mondays, Mrs Pearce on Tuesdays-Fridays).
  • The children will need to bring in a named water bottle each day.
  • PE this term will take place on Thursday mornings and Friday afternoons.
    • Children will need to come into school wearing their PE kit. Please make sure that all of your children's items are NAMED so they can easily be recognised. We all know how unpredictable the British weather can be and the children will be doing PE both inside and outside, so send them in with layers and a waterproof. The children will need to be wearing the following items:
      • A plain white PE top
      • Navy or black bottoms. These could include:
        • shorts
        • joggers
        • leggings
      • A plain blue or black PE jumper
      • A pair of trainers
  • Reading Books - each week the children will bring home a Bag of Books, these will be a selection of  books, in line with the Phonics learning that week, plus a selection of Reading for Pleasure books. The children will be able to enjoy these books for the week (please read them more than once) and then will need to return the Bag of Books to school on a Friday, ready to swap for a new selection of books. Please continue to sign the reading diaries each time you read at home. During Guided Reading, the children will read a Monster Phonics book 3 times during the week, in school, focusing on: book talk and decoding, prosody and comprehension. The children will then bring this book home on a Friday to read at home.
